Bespoke Home Cinema Design and Build

A private home cinema in your basement is one of the most compelling uses of below-ground space for London’s residential property owners. Acoustically separated from the living spaces above, a basement cinema can be designed and equipped to deliver a truly cinematic viewing and listening experience – one that the finest commercial cinemas would envy, in a setting that is entirely your own.

Advantage Basements & Renovations designs and builds bespoke basement home cinemas for private clients across prime central London, combining exceptional acoustic and lighting design with the finest audiovisual technology to create screening environments of extraordinary quality.

Designing the Perfect Basement Cinema in London

A great home cinema begins with a great acoustic environment. The room dimensions, surfaces and treatments must be designed to control reflections, manage low-frequency energy and create a listening environment that allows the full performance of the audiovisual system to be realised.

Our acoustic designers work from first principles to create rooms that are acoustically correct for cinema presentation, incorporating absorptive and diffusive treatments, bass trapping and appropriate structural isolation to prevent sound transmission into other parts of the building.

Within the acoustic shell, we design seating layouts, screen sizes, projection or display configurations and lighting schemes that create an immersive cinema experience. Tiered seating, custom acoustic panels that double as decorative features, integrated lighting control and carefully specified recliner seating are all elements we can incorporate into a cinema that is as beautiful as it is technically accomplished.

FAQs

What size room do you need for a home cinema in London?

1

Home cinemas can be created in a wide range of room sizes, from intimate two-seater screening rooms in 15–20 square metres through to large family cinemas with 8–10 seats in 40–50 square metres or more.

The ideal room size depends on screen size and viewing distance – larger screens require greater viewing distances for optimal picture quality. A common approach is to size the room so that viewers sit approximately 1.5–2.5 times the screen width from the screen.

Our designers assess the available space in your basement and recommend screen sizes and seating configurations to deliver an excellent viewing experience. Acoustic performance is often more important than absolute size in determining cinema quality.

Should I use a projector or a large TV for my basement cinema?

2

Both technologies can deliver excellent results. Large 4K laser projectors are the traditional choice for home cinemas – they can deliver very large image sizes (100–150+ inches diagonal) with outstanding picture quality and the projection setup contributes to the authentic cinema atmosphere. However, they require an adequate throw distance between the projector and the screen, and ideally a light-controlled room, for best performance.

Large-format OLED or QLED displays (75–110+ inches) offer outstanding picture quality, work well in rooms with some ambient light, and eliminate the need for projector installation and maintenance. The choice depends on your room dimensions, how you will use the cinema and your personal preferences. Our audiovisual specialists advise on the optimal solution for your specific cinema.

What acoustic treatment does a home cinema need?

3

Proper acoustic treatment is fundamental to cinema sound quality. Cinemas require controlled reflections and reverberation, effective bass management and isolation from adjacent spaces. We achieve this through a combination of acoustic wall and ceiling treatments, including:

  • Absorptive panels and diffusive surfaces that control reflections without over-damping the room

  • Bass trapping in corners and other pressure zones to manage low-frequency energy

  • Acoustically transparent screen walls that allow speakers to be positioned behind the screen

  • Acoustic doors and seals to prevent sound leakage

  • Structural isolation – floating floors and isolated stud walls – to prevent sound transmission to adjacent rooms

Our acoustic designers specify treatments based on the specific dimensions and characteristics of each cinema room, ensuring optimal acoustic performance.
